About Hatha Yoga
It is the ancient form of Indian traditional yoga. The word 'Ha-tha' is comprised of two syllables ---Ha-Tha. The syllable "HA" is the masculine part symbolized by the Sun and "THA" is the feminine part represented by the moon. The moon represents mental energy and 'pranic' (vital) forces are symbol of sun. It represents dual energy forces which can be felt in each creating process. It symbolizes power of mind and body together. By Hatha Yoga, one can experience the higher experience of yoga. It establishes the perfect balance between emotional, mental, physical and emotional energy flowing inside our body. It prepares our body to receive subtle cosmic energy. Hatha Yoga is the gateway to Raj Yoga.
Components of Hatha Yoga:
There is definition of Asana in Sanskrit "Stiram sukhama asana" which means comfortable and steady (Patanjali). Asanas are pre-requisite for meditation which focuses on sitting comfortable position for extended period. We feel relaxed muscles, energetic movement and sharp bent of body action in Asana.
Yoga Asana are basic steps to higher awareness with the right coordination of mind, body and higher consciousness. Asana Yoga are foundation stones for Hatha Yoga. Mind energy can be sharpened by controlling the physical reactions inside our body.
It is composed of two words---'Prana' means subtle life force and 'Yama' means control. It is more than a breathing control. The subtle life force exists in all living beings which is more subtle than oxygen or air. It means controlling the life force and thus controlling the body and mind.
Mudras are simply hand gestures which regulate equanimity and stabilize mind and attitude by deepening awareness and concentration. Mudras merge pranic (soul) energies with cosmic energies. Mudras bestow "siddhis" or occult powers to its serious practitioners. These are bestowed after the student has learnt asanas and bandhas. It work with subtle consciousness.
The word "Bandha" means to lock or block redirecting the course of energy into the SushumnaNadi running through the center of the spinal chord. It invigorate the pranic or auric body minimizing dissipation. Immeasurable physically this manifests as joy, intelligence, awareness, intuition and charisma. Bandhas act mainly on psychic knots. First knot is for procreation, the second for digestion and metabolism, the third knot for mental and intuitive capabilities. These knots correlate as the chakras on the spinal column.
The word Shatkarm literally means "six actions." These six actions used to purify the vital functions of the body. Shatkarm is used prior to pranayama and other subtle yoga practices. They clean body by removing toxins and balance the three humors established in Ayurveda as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. This paves the way for a strong body with sharp mental faculties most necessary to bear the rigors of yoga practice and meditation. Shatkarm kriyas can never be learnt without the guidance of a capable guru.
